History: Ted Sallis, a biochemist working in the Everglades, was trying to recreate the fabled Super-Soldier Serum that made the superhero known as Captain America, but unbeknownst to him, his wife Ellen Brandt had betrayed him to the terrorist group known as the Advanced Idea Mechanics, or AIM, who sought out the serum for their own ends. She led Ted into a trap, but Sallis managed to break free and escaped into the nearby swamp in his car. Not wanting to let AIM get their hands on his serum, Ted injects the only sample of the unstable formula into himself before sending himself hurtling over the side, crashing into the murky waters of the surrounding swamp.
There, science and the apparent mystical forces of the swamp combined, twisting and molding his body into a towering hulking creature. What was once Ted Sallis was no more, there was only the Man-Thing now. Accompanied by Ellen, the AIM agents tried to track down Ted, only to run headlong into the creature itself. The Man-thing made short work of the agents, but left Ellen's face horribly burned due to his corrosive touch, which reacted to her fear.
After a while, and a few encounters with various people, it was revealed that the swamp in which the Man-Thing inhabits was in fact a place of mystical properties known as the Nexus of All Realities, to which the Man-Thing became its guardian. He would have many altercations with various extra-dimensional entities as time went on, including demons, ghosts, and time-travelling warriors, while at the same time facing down non-supernatural enemies, such as greedy land-developers, fascist groups, and common criminals who make the mistake of entering his swamp.
