History: A nuclear test performed on the island of Krakoa caused all the organisms on the island to merge, combine, into one single sentient being or consciousness. It's strong mutant presence was detected by telepathy Professor Xavier, who then sent his X-men (the original team) to investigate this finding. Desiring to feed upon their mutant energies, Krakoa attacked the X-men upon their arrival, capturing all but Cyclops, whom it allowed to escape.

A new team of mutants was gathered and sent back to Krakoa on a rescue mission to retrieve their captured comrades. It was then that Krakoa revealed itself to them, by taking on a large humanoid form and attacked the two teams. But their attempts to defeat Krakoa proved futile... until the mutant Polaris used her magnetic powers to sever Krakoa's connection to the planet, which resulted in the island-creature being disconnected from gravity itself and sent hurtling into outer space.

Sometime after wards, Krakoa was apparently found (adrift in space) by a being called the Stranger, and placed upon his laboratory planet. It was there that then Avenger and Space Adventurer, Quasar was confronted by Krakoa after his arrival on this planet. Quasar narrowly escaped from the island-creature. Krakoa may well have escaped this planet during an assault on it by the being known as the Over-mind. It wouldn't have been too hard for this creature to survive in space.
