History: The brilliant pathologist Dr. Warren Chapin had noticed a strange phenomenon during his years of performing autopsies: the vertebrae of people who were badly frightened just before they died were often cracked and almost split in two. He named it the Tingler after the tingling sensation a person feels down their spine when frightened. The phenomenon fascinated him, and he was determined to learn more about it. He realized that he needed to view the spine of a living person while they were in a state of incredible terror.
Late one night, Chapin’s unfaithful wife Isabel came home from another of her dates. Chapin confronted her, leading her into his lab at gunpoint. After several minutes of threatening, making the woman more and more afraid for her life, he finally pulled the trigger and she collapsed to the floor unconscious. Acting quickly, he laid her on the examination table and took a series of x-rays. Once finished, he shook the woman and woke her up. The gun was actually loaded with blanks, and she had merely fainted.
The next day, Chapin revealed his incredible findings to his lab assistant, David Morris. The pictures showed a worm-like creature gripping and bending the woman’s spine, but shrinking away as time passed. The men theorized that screaming or otherwise releasing fear tension, a person would kill the Tingler growing inside them. Now knowing that the phenomenon was a real, physical being, the man became even more obsessed with learning about it. He wanted to try capturing one alive, but that would mean killing a person.
Chapin tried, unsuccessfully, to use himself as a guinea pig to see if he could feel the Tingler’s effects without screaming. Finally his chance to examine the mysterious creature came when Oliver Higgins, an acquaintance, brought his deaf-mute wife in for the doctor to examine. The man had come home to find her dead, apparently of fright. Chapin managed to extract the fully mature Tingler from the woman’s corpse. After putting the creature in a container, Chapin and his wife celebrated with some scotch. Unfortunately for the doctor, the woman drugged his glass and he soon passed out. She then released the Tingler from its box and quickly left the house. The worm-like creature climbed onto the man and began strangling him. Luckily Lucy, Isabel’s sister, came home and, upon seeing the creature, screamed. The Tingler released Chapin and fell to the floor, stunned.
Chapin and Morris tried to kill the creature, but it seemed completely unaffected by anything they did to it. In a last-ditch effort, the doctor decided to put the Tingler back into its original host body in hopes that it would die as well. After calling the funeral home and finding out that Higgins had never contacted them, Chapin realized he was the one that had frightened the woman to death. He immediately took the Tingler and went to Higgins’ home, only to have the creature escape shortly after arriving. It went through a loose floor board and down into the theater underneath the apartment. It managed to cause widespread panic within the theater, attacking several people before Chapin and Higgins could recapture it. They brought it back up to the apartment, and Chapin put the Tingler back in the woman’s body before leaving to call the police. Higgins went to stop him, but was stopped himself when his wife’s body stood back up. Too terrified to scream, the man quickly fell victim to his own Tingler.
