History: Legend says that once every thousand years, a new Barugon is born within the valley of the rainbow. When a band of thieves arrived on the island paradise and claimed a large opal discovered during the second World War, the opal was taken to Japan. Accidently left unattended underneath an infrared lamp, the opal-like egg of Barugon hatched! Within moments, the creature grew to enormous sizes and burst out of the ship and began to wreck havoc in Kobe! Nothing could stop its vicious assault as buildings were either burned or encased in thick layers of ice. It didn’t take long for the monster to march into another city, Osaka, but this time the self-defense forces were ready.
Lines of tanks and rockets prepared to fire from a distance, but not one got a shot off. Barugon’s rainbow ray leaped from his back and annihilated his would-be attackers. However, the intense heat of the rainbow attracted Gamera! The shelled giant arrived and battled the fierce reptile, but Barugon was too much. The horned lizard unleashed his deadly ice mist and quickly froze the terrapin titan.
With no other options, the Japanese sought aid from the mythology surrounding Barugon. It was said he would follow a large diamond and wasn’t able to stand the water. The diamond, however, wasn’t large enough anymore. They began to amplify the diamond’s brilliance. Thus, as the project went underway, artificial rain was dropped onto him via helicopters. Finally the plan began and Barugon was lead to the lake, but all did not go according to plan. One of the vile thieves, the very one responsible for bringing Barugon to Japan, intervened and tried to steal the priceless diamond! The plan foiled, Barugon snatched the mortal with his lengthy tongue and devoured him, along with the huge diamond.
As Barugon slept, a new plan began. A huge mirror was constructed not far away from the reptile. When tanks began to open fire, it was hoped he’d lash out with the fabled rainbow and it would then be redirected at him. When things started, Barugon did retaliate, but his reflected ray merely wounded him! Having been hurt by his own power, Barugon would never use the attack again.
With everything failed, it seemed as if nothing could stop the reptile. However, Osaka and everything within the frozen city was starting to thaw. Finally revived, Gamera took to the skies. Hungry for vengeance, the turtle soon engaged the legendary kaiju again. Holding nothing back, the prehistoric terrapin bit down on Barugon’s neck and dragged him into the lake. Weakened by the water, the rainbow lizard was dragged to a watery tomb. Unable to escape from Gamera’s sharp tusks and teeth, the titanic reptile drowned.
